Zagreb with Kids: What Works, What Does Not and What to Ask First

Updated October 20, 2026 · 6 min read

Zagreb is a good city for a family long weekend, but it suits short, indoor-friendly days better than long ones. The easy wins are the chocolate tasting, the Museum of Illusions and a few hours at the zoo. The hard ones are the Plitvice day trip, which takes nine to ten hours, and anything the listing does not describe for children. Before you book, you should know one thing: none of the listings we compared gives a minimum age, so every age question below ends with “ask the operator”.

Chocolate Museum: the easy one

The listing calls the museum ideal for family trips, and the content backs it up: you grind cocoa beans on a metate as the Aztecs did, taste nine types of chocolate and take photos in themed settings. The listing says a visit typically takes between 45 minutes and one hour, depending on how much you read. Exhibits are in Croatian and English. The shop is open to anyone without a ticket, which helps if one child wants chocolate and the other does not.

Museum of Illusions: the rainy-afternoon one

The listing mentions a playroom with games and puzzles, a mirror maze and rooms that change your size. Children who like to try things will be busy for a while. Two conditions on the booking page: food and drink are not allowed, and the listing names wheelchair users as not suitable. It is not a long visit, so combine it with something else. Our museums comparison gives the rest.

The bike tour: with a catch

The bike tour says the ride is “adjusted for all ages”, and the café break includes ice cream for kids. Departures are at 10:00 and 14:00 from Jurišićeva 19, and the group should arrive 15 minutes early to choose helmets and adjust the seats. What the listing does not say is a minimum age or whether child bikes are available. Ask before you pay €49 per person for three hours.

The Tesla museum, and its limits

The Tesla museum has an underground mine and a demonstration of Tesla’s experiments, free with the ticket at 15:00 Tuesday to Friday and 11:00 at weekends. For small children, our museum comparison notes that the museum itself does not recommend the planetarium for under-sevens. The booking page lists people with mobility impairments and wheelchair users as not suitable. Ask the museum before you bring a pushchair.

Outdoors: zoo and mountain

The Zagreb Zoo in Maksimir publishes its hours on its own website: tickets 9:00 to 18:00 and the zoo itself until 19:00, every day, at the time of writing. Zoos often change their hours by season, so check the website before you go. Prices are on a price list on the same site.

A longer outing is the cable car up Sljeme on Medvednica, the mountain behind the city. Check the operator’s current hours and fares before you go.

What to skip with children

  • The pub crawl: the booking page lists under-18s as not suitable. See Zagreb at night.
  • Long day trips: the most-reviewed Plitvice tour runs 9 to 10 hours. The Plitvice guide compares coach and car; a car lets you stop when a child needs it.
  • Museum of Hangovers: our museums comparison calls it a museum for adults who want a laugh.

Our advice

For a first day with kids, do the Chocolate Museum in the morning and an hour in a park, then keep the afternoon free. On a rainy day, add the Museum of Illusions. Check the Zagreb city tours for walks, and ask every operator the same two questions: what is the minimum age, and is there a child-sized option? None of the listings we checked answers them.
