Eating in Zagreb: Food Tour, Dolac Market or On Your Own?
Updated October 20, 2026 · 5 min read
Book a food tour if you have one evening or afternoon and want to taste the city’s dishes in the right order; eat on your own if you have several days. The cheapest way in is the Crobites food tour with 5 to 7 tastings, which is listed at €2.70 per person. That figure is only the booking price. The listing says tips for the guide start from €10 per person and are not included, so plan for about that much more.
Three food tours compared
| Tour | Duration | From | Rating · reviews | Starts at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crobites food tour with 5 to 7 tastings | 2 hours | €2.70 + tip | 4.9 · 133 | Park Zrinjevac |
| Food tour with local dishes, drinks and city stories | 3.5 hours | €79 | 4.9 · 176 | Ban Josip Jelačić Square |
| Restaurants, food and Old Town walking tour | 3.5 hours | €89 | 4.8 · 215 | see booking page |
The whole food category on GetYourGuide has nine offers, from €2.70 at the low end; the full list is on the Zagreb food tours page.
The cheap one: what you get for €2.70
The route follows the listing: about an hour at Dolac Market with cheese tastings, a 15-minute walk through Opatovina Park, then Tkalčićeva Street for street food and two more stops, a bar and a restaurant. The tastings named in the description include čvarci, fresh cheese with sour cream, burek, meat delicacies and figs.
Two things to know before you book. Drinks are not included, and the listing asks you to bring cash. And the tip is the real price. Reviewers describe it as good value, and one wrote that they were happy to hand over a gratuity, yet the review summary also says some travellers wanted clearer information about tipping up front. Now you have it: from €10 each.
The listing also names vegans in its restrictions and asks you to tell the operator about allergies before the tour.
The paid ones: what the extra money buys
The €79 tour is limited to 12 people and led by a licensed guide. Its itinerary runs from Ban Josip Jelačić Square past the cathedral to Dolac, then through Skalinska Street and Tkalčićeva Street to the Stone Gate, with stops at local restaurants and a café for dessert. The description promises pastries, meat dishes, cheeses and liqueurs. Additional food and drinks are not included, and the booking page asks you not to bring large bags.
The €89 tour is the most reviewed of the three, at 4.8 from 215. Its description is short: regional dishes, local sights and the city’s culture. The booking page says at least two people are needed for it to run, and the guide carries a lime green umbrella. One review summary notes that some travellers found the price high for what is included. If you want the detail of the route, the €79 listing gives you more to go on.
Dolac Market on your own
Dolac is the city’s main fresh-food market, just above Ban Josip Jelačić Square. According to the Zagreb tourist board it is open Monday to Saturday 7:00 to 15:00 and Sunday 7:00 to 13:00, and it advises going before 13:00. Our advice is simpler: go in the morning, when the stalls are full. Hours at city markets have been changed before, so look at the sign.
The market has two levels. The raised open-air square sells fruit, vegetables and eggs. The street level below holds the meat, fish and dairy. The dairy hall is where to taste: the tourist board describes homemade cornbread that you find only there, baked by the sellers that morning.
Eating at Dolac works well for breakfast or a picnic. It does not give you the stories, the order of the dishes or the names of the places worth returning to.
Which one for whom
- One free evening, limited budget: the Crobites tour, with €10 in your pocket for the guide and cash for drinks.
- You want a proper meal on foot: the 3.5-hour tours, which cover more stops. Ask yourself whether you will be hungry for dinner afterwards.
- A stay of four days or more: go to Dolac on your own, then take one guided food walk early if you want recommendations for the rest of the trip.
- You need a vegan or allergy-free route: write to the operator before you book. Do not count on the tour adapting on the day.
Our advice
If you are only choosing one, take the Crobites walk and treat the tip as part of the price. Of the three, it is the only one that spends an hour at Dolac. If you would rather pay a fixed price and have a smaller group, the €79 tour is the one with the clearest description.
Combine either with a walking tour of the Upper and Lower Town, since the routes overlap, or with the Museum of Broken Relationships in the Upper Town afterwards.
