Zagreb to Rastoke and Plitvice by Car: Is This the Road Trip Worth Hiring For?
Updated October 20, 2026 · 5 min read
Yes: Zagreb–Rastoke–Plitvice is the day that can justify hiring a car, provided you leave early and already have a timed park ticket. Drive to Rastoke first for a short watermill-village stop, then spend the main part of the day at Plitvice. If you do not want to drive a long return after walking the boardwalks, book the Plitvice and Rastoke guided tour with ticket: it lasts 10 hours, costs €73.50 per person and is rated 4.9 from 2,543 reviews.

The route that makes the car worthwhile
Leave Zagreb early, follow the motorway towards Karlovac and continue south to Rastoke. The A1 uses a distance-based toll system, so collect the ticket or follow the lane instructions and check the current charge with Hrvatske autoceste before departure. Do not build the day around an exact driving time: Zagreb traffic, summer queues and weather can change it.
Rastoke belongs before Plitvice, not after. In the morning it is a natural break between motorway and park, and you can walk around the rivers, waterfalls and old watermills without watching the clock at the end of an already long day. Keep the stop disciplined. Plitvice is the reason for the route and needs the largest block of time.
Match the park ticket to the drive
The national park’s online ticket requires a chosen date, entrance and time period. Buy that before setting off; tickets at the gates are available only if they have not sold out. Use the entrance named on your ticket rather than following whichever parking sign appears first.
For 2026, the park lists adult day tickets at €10 from January to March and in November and December, €23 in April, May and October, and €40 from June through September before the later-entry reduction. The ticket includes the electric boat and panorama vehicle within the selected sightseeing programme.
Car parking at Entrances 1 and 2 costs €1.50 per hour in spring and autumn and €2 per hour from June through September. It is paid on exit. The park also warns that car parks can close when full; do not wait or stop along the D1 road. That is why an early start matters more than squeezing another sight into the route.
Summer and winter are different trips
In summer, the benefit of the car is an early start, but the penalties are fuller parking, the highest ticket band and a tiring drive home after a crowded day. Carry time for queues and do not promise yourself an evening booking in Zagreb.
In the colder months, the entrance price is lower, but trails or transport can change with conditions and daylight is shorter. Check the park’s operating information that morning. The freedom to linger is worth little if the chosen circuit cannot be completed before facilities close.
Car or guided tour?
Choose the car if there are several of you, you want control over the Rastoke stop and the driver is comfortable with a full return day. Compare rental cars for Zagreb, including excess, deposit, fuel and tolls.
Choose the guided trip if you travel alone, nobody wants the return drive, or you want one booking to cover transport, guiding and the park ticket. Its weakness is fixed group timing; its advantage is that the 10-hour day ends without anyone taking the wheel. For most first-time visitors who want both places in one day, that guided tour is our recommendation.
